Riding With The Swarm. Part 1

There are many important factors in riding with a group of Scooter and/or Motorcycles. I am Marbles Mahoney, Founder & President of The Hornets Scooter Club of Long Island. I have been leading rides on a weekly basis for over 20 years now, so I know a lot about the subject from cold hard experience.

COMMUNICATION
I am starting with this, because it is something that I do not see a lot of chatter about. You usually get a very short period of time to talk, while waiting at light. Sometimes you may have something important to communicate, like “I need Gas” of “We should make a left up ahead”. You may however be several scooters back and may not be heard, no matter how big your mouth is. LOL.

We recommend to all our riders to be as vocal as possible. The best way to let the leaders of the ride to know something is to break formation at a stop and ride up to the front. Then you can filter back into position afterwards. The leaders can often be busy keeping track of our route and traffic and my not see or hear you behind them. Whoever is leading usually has a route planned, but suggestions are welcome, but the best time to plan in detail is when we are stopped at a location or before we even start. Hand signals are cool, but only if we all know what they mean. Just open your mouth more, but dont eat any bugs & ride up to the front !

I mentioned “Breaking Formation”. Riding in formation is very important and the subject of our next article.
